At Tempe Dental Care, we offer Invisalign for our patients that fit the criteria. Braces and Invisalign can both be a great option depending on the patient. Your dentist may recommend one over the other, depending on the circumstances but here we will discuss some of the most important pros and cons of each option so you can better understand what may be right for you.
Traditional Braces
Pros:
- Complex Cases: Braces are ideal for addressing severe misalignments, overcrowding, and bite issues that Invisalign may not be able to correct.
- Consistency: Once braces are applied, they’re always working and you can’t ever forget to wear them like you could with Invisalign.
- Durability: Made of metal or ceramic, braces are sturdy and less prone to damage.
Cons:
- Appearance: Metal braces are more noticeable than Invisalign which can make some people self-concious and prefer invisalign for their more discreet look.
- Dietary Restrictions: Wearing braces means you typically need to avoid anything that may damage the wires such as hard, sticky, or chewy foods.
- Oral Hygiene: Braces can be harder to clean around, and if not done properly can lead to plaque buildup which can cause cavities or gum issues.
Invisalign
Pros:
- Aesthetic Appeal: Invisalign are virtually invisible, making them a great option to straighten your smile without feeling self-conscious.
- Removability: You can take Invisalign out for eating, brushing, and special occasions. You have no food restrictions because of this and they are much easier to keep clean since there are no brackets and wires to try and brush around.
- Comfort: Although switching to your next retainer may cause some discomfort at first, generally Invisalign are more comfortable and less likely to cause irritation in your mouth than braces.
Cons:
- Must be Worn: Invisalign need to be worn 20-22 hours per day for the best, most effective results. Forgetting to wear them can delay your progress and may cause you to have to wear them longer than first expected.
- Not Suitable for All Cases: Invisalign may not be as effective for severe misalignments or complex bite issues as they cannot target single tooth movement or bite issues as well as braces.
- Loss or Damage: Since they’re removable, Invisalign can be lost or damaged which could result in replacements that can add to your overall cost.
